Stress Free Holidays? Really?
As we approach the winter solstice, on December 21st, 2021, many of us will celebrate Christmas. For Christians, Christmas is a time to reflect on the miraculous birth of Jesus Christ. Prior to Christianity, the winter solstice was known as Yule, a time to celebrate the longest night of the year and the return of the Sun or the Light. In any case, it is typically a time to celebrate family and friends, or to appreciate the joys of winter.
During this time of Celebration and Joy, we exchange gifts, gather and enjoy traditional holiday foods. Whether you celebrate winter solstice or Christmas, I hope you take some time to reflect on the blessings in your life.
Also, remember this time of year, is not always a happy one for some, as we miss those who are no longer with us or perhaps the stress of the season with shopping, decorating, picking out the perfect gifts, even the financial stress, and trying to be everything to everyone. Be gentle and patient with everyone.
It’s important to take good care of yourself first and remember, giving is nice, but you should never feel pressured into it or strap your budget if you’re really not in the position to do that. Let it be okay if you’re just not up to all of it. You never have to be perfect.
Reflecting On Your Goals, Achievements and What You Can Improve
I like to take a moment at the end of each year, to give thanks for all the blessings we have received over the year, and to reflect on what I would like to change in the coming year.
Don't let the end of the year pass you by without reflecting on what has transpired and how it has changed your life for better or worse. Acknowledge and appreciate, where you are, but also keep in mind that there is always room to grow and change. Forgive yourself for any missteps or setbacks, it's all part of the journey.
Always Do Your Best
In the Toltec teachings of Don Miguel Ruiz, The Four Agreements, agreement 4 is “always do your best.”
"Under any circumstance, always do your best, no more and no less. But keep in mind that your best is never going to be the same from one moment to the next. Everything is alive and changing all the time, so your best will sometimes be high quality, and other times it will not be as good…….”
So, remember, if you always do you best, you can let it be okay when you’re not as good as at other times. Be honest with yourself and be gentle and forgiving as well.
Take some time this week to look back on all the highs and lows of 2021 - they may not seem like much now, but looking back and celebrating your wins, will set into motion more motivation in the coming year.
Whether you celebrate winter solstice or Christmas, Kwanza or Hanukkah, I hope you take some time to reflect on the blessings in your life. Whatever your reasons for celebrating this special time of year, I wish you all the blessings of peace, love and happiness. May your holiday season be filled with joy and wonder!
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
Warmly, Colleen
